purchasing this fine second album from the best band the UK has produced since the Beatles. Yep, that's right I said since the Beatles (or the Kinks...plug in your fav band). Partsy's experimental side appears on one of fav (and underrated) tunes Battery Brides (a tribute to Brian Eno). Colin's songs are a considerable improvement over those for the first album although they still lack that distinctive spark that allows his best songs (I Remember The Sun, Generals and Majors, Love At First Sight, Dying)to be the perfect counter balance for Andy's material. His vocals are a bit more confident and his playing is, as always, very, very good.
Barry...poor Barry would depart after this. In a way it was for the best. His developing songwriting talent couldn't compete with Andy's at this stage. Shreikback (and The League Of Gentlemen) allowed his to both develop as a songwriter and expand his range. My Weapon has taken a lot of flak over the years for its misogynistic tone. It's not terribly witty or innovative but you must keep in mind it's written from the perspective of a character (much like Randy Newman... His singing ability [seems] sadly lacking (something that never changed)but his later distinctive raspy vocals with Shreikback worked well within that context.
The cover like a lot of Xtc covers is cutting edge stuff. It's witty without falling into the witless sea of clever poses. The packaging is pretty close to the original album although there's something missing (and I can't quite put my finger on it) here.
Go2 has been bashed over the years as a poor cousin to White Music. Time has proven the exact opposite to be true; Go2 demonstrates that the band's two important songwriters were growing by leaps and bounds.
