A mixed bag; not a Trio Matamoros product only (4 stars)
There are three Trio Matamoros recordings here and a pressing error lists 12 cuts on the CD sleeve, but the CD has only 10 cuts. (Minuet Cha Cha Cha and El Alacran are missing.) Still, this is a really enjoyable collection, although it's a mixed bag of styles and time periods. The tremendous Israel Kantor (covering Arsenio Rodriguez' El Reloj de Pastora) and Nico Saquito are from different eras, but they sound fresh and really rock. You can't go wrong with Celia and la Sonora or the hot Chappotin ensemble, either. It's a great CD to drive to. Warning to musical purists: the Matamoros cuts have been remixed with additional strings and aren't exactly the old recordings. |  | | |
