Additional Info: Tracks Reviews
Time For A Comprehensive 3-CD Box Set (3 stars) I suppose, when these 11/12 track CD versions of earlier LP releases first were issued by RCA. they were eagerly accepted by the record-buying public. However, in the intervening years we have seen magnificent compilations from the likes of Ace of London, Bear Family of Germany, and Eric Records of California present upwards of 30 tracks on one CD, combined with copious and detailed liner notes. Those are the products that deserve 5-star ratings.
My admiration for John Denver's music is second to none, but I simply cannot award 5 stars to any product that does not live up to its billing. For example, Volume 1 of RCA's "Greatest Hits" at first re-issued the same 11 tracks that appeared on the vinyl LP, and only four were actually among his hits: Take Me Home Country Roads, Goodbye Again, Rocky Mountain High, and Sunshine On My Shoulders. Three were uncharted flipsides (Poems, Prayers And Promises b/o Take Me Home Country Roads, Starwood In Aspen b/o Friends With You - which was NOT in that initial release - and The Eagle And The Hawk, which backed Goodbye Again). Four others were neither hits nor their B-sides: Follow Me, For Baby (For Bobbie), Rhymes And Reasons, and Leaving On A Jet Plane. That volume was later re-issued with three additional tracks, this time including Friends with You, but also adding two more non-hits: I Guess He'd Rather Be In Colorado and Daydream. Nice songs all - but not among his "Greatest Hits."
The 12-track Volume 2 was much better in that regard, giving us 10 legitimate hits (Farewell Andromeda (Welcome To My Morning), Annie's Song, Back Home Again, Thank God I'm A Country Boy, I'm Sorry, Calypso, Fly Away, Looking For Space, Like A Sad Song, and My Sweet Lady. But again they threw in two that were neither hits nor the B-sides of hits: Grandma's Feather Bed and The Old Guitar.
This 11-track Volume 3 in the series went one better with only one non-hit (The Gold And Beyond). All the rest were indeed among his greatest hits, including the duet with Emmylou Harris, Wild Montana Skies, which, although not making the Billboard Pop Hot 100, still did well on both the Country (# 14) and Adult Contemporary (# 26) charts.
Even so, it's time to "retire" these three volumes and issue a comprehensive 3-CD "Greatest Hits" set which contains those included in the three volumes, some informative liner notes (this contains nothing in that regard) plus: Everyday, I'd Rather Be A Cowboy, Please Daddy, Sweet Surrender, Christmas For Cowboys, It Makes Me Giggle, Baby, You Look Good To Me Tonight, It Amazes Me, The Cowboy And The Lady, Downhill Stuff, What's On Your Mind, Sweet Melinda, Garden Song, Don't Cloe Your Eyes Tonight, Dreamland Express, Along For The Ride ('56 T-Bird), Country Girl In Paris, and And So It Goes (with The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band).
Now THAT would be a 5-star collection. | | | | Great music (4 stars) Why is Volume 3 now out of print? Volume 3 completes the awesome set of John Denver's radio versions of his greatest hits. I have all three volumes and the music is great and there's no reason to have Volume 3 out of print. "Love Again" and "Autograph" are great versions here. If you can find this album and are a John Denver fan, this is a must. | | | | JD Greatest Hits Vol Three (5 stars) I consider this John Denver's best of all time. You can't top "How Can I Leave You Again" , "Love Again" ,"Seasons of the Heart" and "Autograph". All of the rest of the tunes are gems as well and John's sounded strong and clear and true. It is a crime that the other two greatest hits albums are available and this one is not. Fans would buy it up at the store or on line if it was made available. What are the record companies thinking? | | | | The Best of the Best of John Denver (5 stars) This is my favorite of all John Denver's albums. His voice is at its best and every number on this album is excellent. My particular favorites are "Perhaps Love" (unlike a previous reviewer, I think Placido Domingo's voice is terrific in combination with Denver's) and "Wild Montana Sky", a beautiful anthem to Denver's open spaces/free spirit theme. Highly recommended. | | | | The Last Of John Denver's Three Greatest Hits Albums! (5 stars) This is the final of the three albums of John Denver's greatest hits released even as he was continuing to make them. Here we see the additional monster hits that kept him in a position of preeminence, popularity and superstardom in the 1970s. In his heyday no one was outselling his albums or out-booking John for concert appearances, and considering the incredible talents on the scene at the time, that is a pretty good indication of just how popular he was, and just how universal John Denver's appeal was. No one else sang of the wide-open possibilities and seemingly limitless possibilities for a good life awaited those who would free themselves from the bonds that confined them and just dare to soar along with him in the wild open spaces. All the tracks here are terrific, from "How Can I Leave you Again?", a wonderful love song, to "Shanghai Breezes", "Seasons Of The Heart", and "Perhaps Love" (with Placido Domingo) all from his wonderful "Seasons Of The Heart" album, to Welcome to My Morning", to "Dancing With The Mountains", another of his many paeans to appreciating the beauties of nature and the natural life. John, more than any of his contemporaries, actively caught the public's imagination regarding the wonders of the natural environment, and in a time when environmental concerns were splashed all over the headlines and the evening news, John's vision of popular concern for and stewardship of the natural world was immensely important. Indeed, to speak of John now is to evoke a mental picture of him backpacking in the Rockies, that shock of unruly blond hair tossled about and a grin as big as the wide open sky behind him. I love all the songs here, including "Wild Montana Skies", "Some Days Are Diamonds', and "The Gold And Beyond", about the Olympic movement, and my own special favorite, "I Want To Live". This album represents a wonderful overview of the mature work of John as he thrilled a whole generation with his own perspective of a meaningful life lived in the natural splendor of nature. I know you will enjoy this as well as the other two in this three album series of John's greatest hits. Far out! | | | |
