Additional Info: Tracks Reviews
The Bee Gees sold these songs without even trying--they were THAT good (5 stars) Bee Gees' 1st is a CD that, although currently out of print, really gives us terrific tunes by The Bee Gees that could never be forgotten. The sound quality is rather good and I love that artwork!
"Turn Of The Century" starts things off with a solid number by The Bee Gees; their unique sound is there and they harmonize well. The musical arrangement is also very impressive on "Turn Of The Century." "Red Chair, Fade Away" is equally beautiful even if this number is not as well known as some of their other songs; the modulations between keys prove their talent beyond doubt! Listen also for "In My Own Time;" they sound great and the electric guitars work wonders for this tune.
"Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You" follows; and The Bee Gees give this a distinctly late `60s psychedelic flavor which holds its own very well. The percussion and more help to carry the melody on "Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You" as well.
"New York Mining Disaster 1941" is one of their very first real hits; and they sing this with all their hearts and souls! The guitars are great and this tune is clearly a highlight of this album. "To Love Somebody" jumps forward in time a number of years to reveal a more mature, polished Bee Gees singing like no other group ever could! "To Love Somebody" is a tender love ballad that gets the royal treatment from this group; and I think you'll enjoy this very much.
"I Can't See Nobody" is another marvelous ballad that proves the talent of these fine men; the musical effects are excellent and they sing and play this very well. "Please Read Me" has great percussion; and the CD ends very nicely with The Bee Gees performing "Close Another Door." "Close Another Door" stuns me with its beauty and it makes a strong ending for this album.
Overall, this Bee Gees album gives us an assortment of great numbers by The Bee Gees that don't always get the recognition or the airplay that they deserve. True Bee Gees fans will want this CD for their collections; and even a casual listener will find much to enjoy here on this CD.
| | | | What a great album (5 stars) I recently found a copy of Main Course at the local church flea market and had to admit that this was one great band. Sent off for this right afterwards and couldn't believe that the early Bee Gees are amoung the best of their age. The classic cuts on this album are simply great. | | | | Stop laughing and get this album now, you'll be amazed how good it really is! (5 stars) Pre-Disco by 10 years and the Bee Gees first is full of Beatlesque tunes and incredible vocals, mainly from then lead singer Robin. Maurice plays the lumbering Mellotron on "every christian lion hearted..." it sounds amazingly like a lost Moody Blues track. This album is far superior to my initial initiation to early Bee Gees "Best of Bee Gee's, this album is more of a complete picture of what these 3 young men were capable of. THere is no sense to try and explain to your laughing friends why the Bee Gees are so good, no one will understand but the true music lover. | | | | The Bee Gees first and the best (5 stars) I was first introduced to the Bee Gees when I heard "In My Own Time" on the radio and was convinced it was the Beatles under a different name. I purchased their first single and after listening to the flip side ("I Can't See Nobody") I realized this was not The Fab Four. It took awhile to get used to the unique vocal of Robin but soon this was my favorite.
The first album was a revelation, not only because it had 7 songs on each side, but that every song was either good or great, from the baroque strains of "Turn of the Century" to the harmonies of "New York Mining Disaster", and like the Beatles they had a knack for memorable melodies and fabulous vocals.
The only downside in retrospect is that it's a tad overproduced in places but the orchestrations in general are quite tasty and fit the feel of the album as a whole.
I guess it's because they're brothers that the harmonies sound so special, but I have always thought that their particular vocal blend was superior to The Beatles, The Beach Boys or Crosby, Stills and Nash.
They have produced quite a few excellent albums during the course of their career and they were even able to make Disco sound good, but it was this first album that was the best.
| | | | bowie and oasis ripped off the bee gees (5 stars) this album proves that copycat thing was big in the 60s,and although john lennon bitched about the bee gees in his playboy interview.the bee gees are amazing and who produced and played the instruments were probably folks who got bounced by the beatles and went on to do the stones ,the who ,pink floyd and had the magic recipe.its all good and this cd rules. | | | |
